Orlando Magic Close to Hiring General Manager, Head Coach Front-Runner Named

HoopsWorld is reporting via their sources that the Orlando Magic will have their list of general manager candidates finalized by next weekend. Former New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower, San Antonio Spurs assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey, former Portland Trail Blazers vice president of basketball operations Tom Penn and Oklahoma City Thunder assistant general manager Troy Weaver are all under consideration, HoopsWorld says.

As for head coaching candidates, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone and Magic assistant Steve Clifford are going to be considered. Malone is said to be the favorite for the position, and his chances could be greater if the Magic hire Bower as the two have worked together before.

This report comes just three days after Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi reported that Brian Shaw is the favorite for the head coaching position. Bianchi wrote in that report that it is a ridiculous idea to hire Phil Jackson as our general manager. Bianchi asked the question, “Why would you want hire one of the greatest COACHES in NBA history as a team president?”

The 2012 NBA Draft is being held two weeks from Thursday on the 28th, so look for those positions to be filled as soon as possible. Whichever name fills the GM position, they will have their hands full with a decision regarding that Dwight Howard cat. Keep him? Or trade him and deal with possibly being the most hated person in Orlando for trading out the league’s best center.
