Jeff Van Gundy Rips Magic For Way They Fired Stan, Says It Was “Unprofessional”

Current ESPN commentator Jeff Van Gundy took to ESPN Radio to air his frustrations with the way the Magic handled the firing of his brother, Stan. He said it was unprofessional the way they fired him saying, “For him [Stan] to have been in the office all day and the President, Alex Martins, knows that he is there and let them leave and then he calls him on the phone to fire him? It’s unprofessional.”

Jeff believes Martins fired Stan because they feel that would be the best way to keep Dwight Howard long-term. During the press conference in which Martins announced Stan was let go, he said that it was a “very hard day for him letting Stan go,” and Jeff isn’t buying it. “He does this every time he fires somebody at the Magic with countless disregard at how it impacts people that he just fired,” Jeff said.

Then Jeff started taking shots at Martins.

Via Slam Online:

Okay listen [Alex Martins] all you have done in your 25 years in the business is release press releases and run the business side. You don’t know if a ball is blown up or stuffed. You don’t know if the pick and roll coverage on the side is right or wrong. Just say that I have no knowledge about basketball. It’s offensive when someone who has no knowledge about basketball even in a positive comment tries in those ways to sort of negate what Brian Hill did as a coach or what Matt Guokas did as a coach. He doesn’t know one thing about basketball so please hold off your comments on my brothers expertise since you know nothing about basketball.”

You can definitely see that Jeff and Stan are related, just by their blunt statements alone. This is the first time I’m hearing about how Stan was fired — that Martins waited until after he left (the office) to fire him… over the phone. I can’t imagine how that must feel. I agree with everything Jeff said, I don’t believe Stan should have been let go. Trade Howard, now.
