Jeanius of the Week: Bears Wide Receiver Sam Hurd

The second Jeanius of the Week post comes from the NFL, just like the first. On this edition we have on Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd.

Sam Hurd did his best Frank Lucas impression by getting arrested by undercover agents when he attempted to purchase cocaine and marijuana from a supplier. The criminal complaint against him describes Hurd as regularly dealing large amounts of drugs in Chicago.

But don’t worry, Hurd’s attorney said:

“Sam intends to fight these charges, and we intend to defend him fully.”

One of his lawyers, David Kenner, was part of the team that successfully defended rapper Snoop Dogg against murder charges. Hurd was scheduled to appear in federal court to face charges on “possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.”

Hurd met with an undercover agent back in July while he was still a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He told this agent that he wanted to buy “five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week.” During this meeting he agreed to pay $25,000 per kilo of cocaine and $450 per pound of marijuana. At this time Hurd was already distributing four kilograms of cocaine per week, but needed to switch dealers because his current dealer couldn’t supply him with anymore.

After Hurd and the agent agreed on a price, the agent gave him a kilo of cocaine and he was then arrested. Before he was arrested he admitted to the agent that he plays for the Bears and would pay for the cocaine after practice, which ended at 5:30pm.

So for all that we appreciate you Sam, thanks for giving us another great Jeanius of the Week post. You know if I made the amount of money these NFL players make, you’d never hear anything out of me, unless you saw me poppin’ bottles at the club or driving in my Rolls.

Hurd signed a three-year deal with the Bears in July, which included a $1.3 million signing bonus. Over the three years he was scheduled to make $685,000 in 2011, $865,000 in 2012, and $1 million in 2013. You just cost yourself at least $1.865 mill, good luck buddy.
