Jeanius of the Week: Petey Pablo
This should go down as one the easiest posts I will have done to date, this story practically writes itself. Rapper Petey Pablo was arrested last September 11th (2010) at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm. On Tuesday the rapper was sentenced to almost three years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen firearm.
Aside from the obvious, I think the funniest part of this story is that he was trying to board a plane to go to Los Angeles to attend the 2010 VMA’s. Pablo hasn’t been relevant since 2004, so why exactly was he going to attend the VMA’s? To pick up all those awards he was nominated for? I know the quality of the VMA’s has gone down in recent years, but even they know better than that.
Back to the obvious question at hand here, why the f— would he try to board a plan with a loaded gun? A stolen gun at that! According to authorities the gun was stolen during a 2005 home burglary in Gardena, California, so right around the time he was blowin’ up the charts. What you also might not know about Petey, whose real name is Moses Barrett III, is that he got popped for armed robbery and was sentenced to 14 years.
After the incident involving former UCF student and current Playboy model, Shanna McLaughlin, I had a conversation with someone about this. Shanna was arrested on a similar charge, trying to board a plane with a loaded gun. This person is a gun owner and I am not. This person told me that it’s very easy to misplace your gun in a duffle bag. I told them that was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life. Regardless of misplacing it or not, you should always know what’s in your bag and you better at all times know where your loaded gun is. There’s a reason why airport security always reminds you to never leave your luggage unattended. You should know that you’re going to an airport and certain things, like a loaded gun, are prohibited. What’s more to this arrest is that it happened on September 11th. There was this event that happened in 2001 that was possibly the worst attack on American soil to date, this event caused the airports to take extreme precautions when allowing people to board planes.
In my opinion Petey should be thanking whoever it is he prays to that he only got 35 months. This is a guy who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for armed robbery, so it’s clear he has a problem staying out of trouble. He should have had the book thrown at him and got far more time than this. Petey recently had an interview with HipHop DX and said this regarding the incident:
It was an unfortunate thing that took place. And, we trying to work it out.
An unfortunate thing that took place? It wasn’t an unfortunate event, an unfortunate event is a family member dying or having to sit through an entire Soulja Boy song, this was a dumb move by a dumb person. You can’t expect anyone to believe that you’re sorry for this event, you’ve committed equally dumb crimes in the past! What’s worse is now we have to see #FreePetey posted on forums and Twitter for the next three years.
