Kanye West’s VMA Outburst Two Years Later

(2009 VMA Status)

I have to say I’m loving that Facebook has decided to get back into posting these ‘On This Day,’ posts, old statuses that were posted, well on this day in past years. I was just getting ready to go to bed when I logged into Facebook and noticed the status that you see above. Two years ago tonight this happened:

So two years ago tonight Kanye West showed up at the VMA’s with Amber Rose (Khalifa?), taking a bottle of Hennessy “to the head,” (drinking it right out the bottle). When he decided to interrupt Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video, and the rest as they say is history. Kanye West was vilified, and Taylor became the victim. A lot of (black) people, yeah I said it, thought that Kanye made Taylor Swift a household name. This was far from the truth as her self-titled debut album, which dropped in 2006, was certified five times platinum. Her second album, Fearless, which was out during the time of the incident, sold almost 600,000 copies in it’s first week, was the first album of 2009 to go platinum, and went six times platinum in the US. She was clearly growing her fan base as the sales of her Fearless album were over 15 times of her self-titled debut album, and this was before “The Kanye Episode,” happened. Therefore, no one should have been surprised by her Speak Now album selling nearly double her previous effort. So I’m sure Kanye gave her slight boost, but nothing she probably wouldn’t have gotten anyway, as was her trend.

Let’s take a look at Kanye West since the incident, he started off by getting emotional on The Tonight Show the next night:

Unlike Taylor, Kanye’s album sales were actually going decreasing let’s take a look:

  • The College Dropout: 3.1 million
  • Late Registration: 2.4 million
  • Graduation: 2.16
  • 808s & Heartbreak: 1.63
  • My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: 1.19

His first album was his highest selling, and he has seen a bit of a dip in sales with each album following, so as much as it was a bad PR move on his part, again, it doesn’t seem like anything that wouldn’t have happened anyway. He disappeared for a few months and went to Hawaii to record what most people, myself not included, considered to be his worst album, 808s & Heartbreak. Which was an album about the pain that he had suffered which included: breaking up with his longtime girlfriend and most importantly the passing of his mother.

I posted this on Facebook a few weeks back after hearing Chris Brown’s latest single, “She Ain’t You,” on the local pop station, that I was amazed that pop radio would play Chris Brown’s music, but not Kanye West’s, ever since what took place at the 2009 VMA’s. The last time I checked what Chris Brown did to Rihanna was a lot worst than what Mr. West did at the VMA’s. “All Of The Lights,” was a very pop-friendly song, which features Rihanna who is one of the hottest artists on radio right now, that didn’t get much love on pop stations. He is also cut from Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” remix on some stations. Personally I found the incident to be hilarious as seen by the status above, but my co-worker Shelly Flash does say I have a twisted sense of humor, but I will say pop radio GET OVER IT, because most other people already have! In the overall scheme of things this didn’t affect neither artist much, other than Kanye being looked upon as an asshole, your favorite artist is probably one behind closed doors, the album sales continued on the trend they were already on#ThoughtsofaJeanius
