6 BOLD 2012 Grammy Predictions

So the Grammy’s are a good seven months away, but I’m going to make some bold predictions about some of the things that will happen on when the show airs in February!

#1 The Grammy’s WILL capitalize on this infamous moment

Kanye West and Taylor Swift will both be nominated for at least two of the top awards for the night against each other. That will definitely draw some attention for the show, and provide for several awkward moments during the show, oh yeah and expect to see that clip on repeat all over TV. If one of them wins it’s over, because you know they will instantly zoom in on the other person the second the winner is announced.

#2 Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” will win Album of the Year

I have not listened to that many albums over the past year but like I said previously I fell as though Kanye and Taylor Swift will both be nominated for Album of the Year. Following this years Grammy Awards a music executive by the name of, Steve Stoute, called out Steve Portnow, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Science (NARAS), and the Grammy’s themselves for continually ignoring the cultural impact of artists, specifically  naming Eminem, Kanye West, and Justin Beiber. He said the Grammy’s used them to generate interest and viewership for the show, but then snub those same artists when the awards are handed out. I think the show will take note of this and Kanye will benefit from it and win the biggest award of the night, which he’s been nominated for three times, but never won.

#3. Either Frank Ocean or Tyler the Creator will get nominated for Best New Artist

I don’t think either one of them will win, because of who they will be up against, but for whichever one of them it will be a pleasure to be nominated LOL.

#4 Bruno Mars will win Best New Artist

The nominees will be Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, one of the two artists I mentioned in #3, I’m leaning more towards Tyler since he is less known now that “Novacane,” is getting a lot of radio airplay at the moment. Generally the nominees include one to two well-known artists and the rest of the field is made up of unknown artists so  I won’t try to guess what the rest of the field will be. I honestly believe this will be a “two-person race” between Bruno and Nicki, with Bruno pulling out the victory.

#5 Kanye West will be nominated For Best Rap Album twice

Once for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and once for Watch the Throne, I think Twisted Fantasy, will win considering I have it scheduled to win Album of the Year, but I believe Mr. West will be nominated against himself multiple times in the various Rap categories.

6. The nominees for Album of the Year

Now I know that we still have a couple months of albums before the nominees are announced, but I  feel as though the field is for the most part set with another one possibly  two being added to round out the list.

  • Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
  • Lady Gaga – Born This Way
  • Adele – 21
  • Taylor Swift – Speak Now

We’ve already talked about Kanye, but Lady Gaga apparently can do no wrong, even though I don’t think her new music is as good as her first album, she has reached the point where she can pretty much do whatever she wants and it will be praised. Taylor Swift is always a Grammy favorite, as I like to call them, there are certain artists who will always me nominated, and generally win a lot of Grammy’s she is one of them. Adele’s 21, album is currently the top selling album of the year in the United States, and has gotten great reviews. I’m not so sure about the final nominee or two, but these albums are a shoe in for the nights top prize.

  1. Kanye will be 0 for 4 for Album of the Year at the end of next year’s awards ceremonies, because Adele is a virtual lock to sweep. She will win Album of the Year, Record of the Year (Rolling in the Deep), Song of the Year (ditto), Female Pop Vocal Performance (Someone Like You—-they have to honor both masterpieces on the album), and Pop Album.

    • I can see her winning 2 out of the 3, but not sweeping. Generally when an institution gets called out they react, which is why I think Kanye will get one of the Big 3 awards.

  2. taylor awift is noi going to win any of the top awards, though she might be nominated. adele will sweep them all.

    • I don’t think (or hope) that Taylor wins any awards, I just think she will be nominated. The last time the top 3 awards were swept at the Grammy’s was in ’07. I can see her winning two out of the three, but not sweeping.

  3. I believe Adele and Kanye will lead the pack with the most nominations. However, I see Adele winning the big three categories (Album, Record, Song). You are correct with your Album of the Year nominations, but I think the Academy will nominate Watch the Throne instead of MDTF. Bruno will win Best New Artist, but I see the Academy awarding Nicki with Best Rap Album as compensation for not winning BNA. The Best Rap Album category will be a tough one since Kanye, Nicki and Lil Wayne all had major albums this year.

I don’t think the Steve Stoute letter will have any impact since Adele’s album has been the best selling album of 2011 so far, being both a critical and commercial success. He was just pissed that his personal favorites didn’t win. The Grammy’s have honored commerical artists….did he forget that Beyonce and Taylor Swift each won five of more trophies on the same night??? Or that Lauryn Hill and Outkast have won Album of the Year?? His letter had no grounds; it was just another immature ranting from a “hot shot” record producer.

My prediction for Album of the Year:

    Adele- 21 (winner)
    Kanye/Jay-Z-Watch the Throne (potential upset)
    Lady Gaga-Born This Way
    Taylor Swift – Speak Now
5th slot – Rock or Indie Band

    Record of the Year

Adele – Rolling In The Deep (winner)
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks (potential upset)
Rihanna – Only Girl (In the World)
Whiz Khalifa – Black and Yellow
    Bruno Mars – Grenade

Adele – Rolling in the Deep
    Bruno Mars – Grenade
Lady Gaga – Born This Way
Adele – Someone like You (winner)
    5th slot – country song

    Pop Album

    Adele -21
    Lady Gaga – BTW
    Rihanna – LOUD
    Tony Bennet – Duets II
    Maroon 5

    Rap Album

Jay Z/ kanye – Watch the Throne
    Nicki – PInk Friday
    Kanye – MDTF
Lil Wayne – The Carter IV
    Whiz Khalifa

    • Thank you so much for that well thought out comment, I r eally appreciate it! I don’t see WTT getting nominated for Album of the Year, ‘Dark Fantasy’ has a more Grammy feel to it. especially since a lot of “experts” said they felt that the album didn’t sound cohesive. I also can’t see Wiz Khalifa or Rihanna being nominated for Record of the Year, unless you count “All of the Lights,” which I expect to be nominated for one of the big awards. I will be working on another Grammy post in the next week so subscribe to the site and look out for it!! Thanks again 🙂

  4. Just so you guys know, Bruno Mars is already disqualified for Best new Artist category because he won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance last year. Therefore Nicki Minaj will take that award.

    • They said he is eligible since his album came out after the cutoff date. They’ve already hinted that he will be nominated for next years awards.

    • Grammy rules states that if you have previously won a Grammy you are not eligible for a Best New Artist award. His bid for this award has ended when he won a Grammy last year.

      • Grammy rules, like all others are meant to be broken, Maroon 5 won Best New Artist in 2005, which was a full three years after their debut album, Songs About Jane was released. Also Lady Antebellum won Song and Record of the Year, as well as Best Country Song & Best Country Performance By A Group Or Duo With Vocals, for “Need You Now,” the single, last year even though the song was released in August of 2009. So I would count on Bruno being nominated for Best New Artist!
