Jeanius Review: NBC’s The Voice

So normally I don’t watch these American Idol type shows, but the hype on this new show The Voice reeled me in. So I decided to watch the first two episodes before I decided to write a review on it. Did it live up to the hype??

For those of you who don’t know The Voice is a new  singing competition show which features four coaches (pictured above L to R Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, and Cee Lo). The selling point of this show was the fact that the auditions were all about the voice and not the look of the singers, which was what caught my attention. During the auditions the coaches had their backs to the performers so they couldn’t see who was singer and had to choose them only by hearing them sing. You can see the full details of the show here.

So the first two weeks were the blind auditions where the teams of eight were formed. The way it worked, someone would perform, and if a judge liked their performance they would push a buzzer and turn around. If more than one judge buzzed in the performer chose which team they wanted to be on. There were a couple interesting moments on the auditions like when Cee Lo told one of the contestants that he heard himself in one of the contestants, who performed Bruno Mars’ – “Just The Way You Are,” which most people don’t know was actually written for Cee Lo. There was also the awkward moment when Adam chose someone thinking it was a woman but it was actually a man.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

They got into a weird situation where there weren’t enough contestants to fill up the teams, so they brought back some of the contestants who weren’t chosen and let them do different songs. That defeats the whole purpose of the show in my opinion since each judge picked the contestants who they were upset that they didn’t pick the first time, they should have gotten fresh artists to audition.

Overall I thought it was a pretty good concept for a show, I just think that after the judges get their teams down to four,  I fear the show will just be another American Idol show when the fan votes take over. In that the wrong people will be voted off and it turns into a popularity contest. Either way I’ll be tuning in next week to see how the head to head rounds go! Check out The Voice, Tuesday nights 10pm on NBC! What did you think of the show? Hit the comments and let me know!

  1. In the second episode of the continued blind auditions Adam Levine was by far the coach who listened to the actual VOICES of the competitors the best. He was forced to choose his last two team members last because of this. I think he has a great ear for music and was just seeking to get the best people to be a part of his team…meaning the best singers. But in the end he was forcd to pick two at random..which you can tell he was a bit disappointed about, Still looking forward to see how he will train his newly created team.

  2. I have the same fear about the show turning into a popularity contest. Guess we’ll see what happens. Too bad Canadians can’t vote.

  3. i agree, i wondered too why they didnt bring in new talent and where they even got this talent i havent been EXTREMELY blown away yet not gonna lie

  4. I absolutely love this show so far!:) Adam, ceelo, Christina, and Blake areamazing together. I’m not so sure how the show will b as it goes on but the blind auditions were amazing! Definitely watching next week

  5. This show is just going to grow more popular after every episode… Just wait and see… In The Netherlands it was getting insane ratings… 20% of the country was watching the final!

  6. Thanks for the comments! I am really enjoying the show so far, because it’s different from what every other show is doing. The next round also looks interesting where they have to perform the same song at the same time and the judge eliminates them. The only part I’m not sold on is the fan voting. Hopefully it’s only part of the elimination process and not the whole thing!
